Theseus & the Minotaur

A Verse Drama to Accompany Drama Workshops

Act 2 Scene 2 : Near the labyrinth. Theseus under guard

Narrative Verse for use with Workshops 9 and 10

Narrator :

As darkness fell, clouds hid the moon
The morning would come all too soon.
Young Theseus sat alone, apart
And searched for courage in his heart
And called his father’s name.

Then someone touched his shoulder bare
He turned to see a young girl there.
She told him she could save his life
If only she could be his wife
And take his family name.

Her father was a cruel man
But she could foil his wicked plan-
With just a simple ball of thread
At this, bold Theseus shook his head
Dismissing such a claim.

But Ariadne persevered
The Minotaur was to be feared
But Theseus was strong and brave-
His god-like strength would help to save
Him when the creature came.

But just as fateful as the beast
Who liked on human flesh to feast.
The labyrinth’s tangled pathways spread
A ghostly graveyard for the dead
For no one outward came.

Ariadne : ‘The lustrous thread will mark your track
And guide your way, then lead you back.
For I believe you have the will
This evil Minotaur to kill -
And you will win great fame’

Narrator :

Her words resounded in his ear.
He felt that now he must prepare
To face his most demanding test
But first his body had to rest
Until the morning came.
