Act Three : Scene One - In the streets of Verona
Narrator :
The lovers secretly had wed
But someone wanted Romeo dead. Tybalt, who saw
them meet and kiss Had vowed he would destroy their bliss
And when he went into the street
Determined that they both should meet
He challenged Romeo to a duel
Intent the ancient grudge to fuel
To satisfy his instincts cruel
But Romeo could not fight a man
Belonging to his new wife’s clan
And so a tragedy began
Mercutio did not understand
And rashly made a gesture grand.
He challenged Tybalt for his friend
So Romeo had to defend,
To bring the contest to an end.
But as his sword drew them apart
Tybalt’s pierced Mercutio’s heart.
When Romeo saw his sorry state
He felt he must retaliate.
With rage and sadness he was filled
And could not rest ‘til he had killed
The man his friend’s brave heart had stilled.
Narrator :
As Romeo ran off to hide
The people came from far and wide.
The Prince said ‘Justice must be done’
If Romeo was the guilty one
He never more could live at home
But always far away must roam.
